This is worth doing as these cars tend to be better at their base level than the early cars are, even with upgrades. This means that, by wrecking their car, you gain access to it yourself. In certain races, a car is marked as “stealworthy”. One mechanic that might have you coming back to Carmageddon is the ability to acquire the enemy’s car. It didn’t offer enough incentive for me, but maybe potential consumers weren’t anticipating a deep customisation option and prefer the stream-lined approach. It’s a very basic form of progress, but for an arcade racer, this makes sense.

There are 5 stages of upgrade for each category and the upgrades are not shared across cars from what I can tell. I assume this is to limit becoming too powerful for the early game levels.

The upgrades must be unlocked by progressing through the Career. Acquiring the tokens isn’t enough, though. These tokens can be spent on upgrades to three categories for your chosen car: Armour, Power and Offensive. The second progression consists of car upgrade tokens. The game could use a reduction in points requirement. Due to the repetitive nature and the high amount of points needed to unlock later levels, consumers will find themselves grinding out the same level a few times over. Score points in Career Mode to unlock new stages (16 in total) – that’s the progression that’ll eat up most of the player’s time. There are two forms of progression in Carmageddon Max Damage. Mow down civilians as you beat your enemies out of the way to do so. It embraces the intended chaos of the game. In a game about pure destruction, I never felt powerful at all in my time with it, and that’s a problem when the actual racing portions of the game don’t handle well.Ī redeeming feature is the Ped Chase mode. I can’t stand how awkward it is when you’ve collided with an enemy and the momentum comes crashing down with you. Having gone back to the game for a brief time using better vehicles, I have a better impression of the game, but I still feel like the cars handle terribly. Those are all of the details you essentially need. Destroying each other’s vehicles is both allowed and encouraged. Charge through checkpoints for several laps and be the first to cross the finish line.

In the most traditional and (arguably) worst mode, Death Race is what it says it is: a race. Reach them first and gather enough points to win. Much like Checkpoint Stampede, a pedestrian (hence Ped) will be marked for death. The amount of points needed to win can change per stage and points can be stolen by destroying an opponents vehicle if they’ve collected any checkpoints. Be the first to reach it and score a point towards the win. Red glowing checkpoints will appear one at a time on the map. Obliterate the other cars and emerge victorious. Destroy the opposition, progress through checkpoints or mow down civilians. Those game modes are: Classic CarmaĬlassic Carma involves doing whatever it takes to win.

A Free Mode that allows for customisation of many options to create a unique match, and finally online Multiplayer create a custom online match, managing number of players, rule sets and the like.ĭepending on the game mode, the aim of the game will change. The game offers a Career Mode, featuring 16 stages housing varying numbers of individual races. That said, after completing the first two campaign missions, it felt as if I’d experienced all that there was to do, and I didn’t feel encouraged to do more (although I did).

GameplayĬarmageddon Max Damage is a third-person car combat game with several modes and a heap of content to engage with. Menu layouts, generic heavy music, red and black everywhere: all things you’d forgive at a £12.99 price point perhaps, but not so much at the £29.99 asking price as it stands. No matter the difference between this and, say, Forza, most will see a car game.Īs a whole, the design of Carmageddon just seems mediocre all-round. The biggest difficulty for Carmageddon, and perhaps an unfair judgement against it, is that it’s a car game on the surface. Much like the rest of the game, it doesn’t look great, but it’s fine. The damage done to the cars in Carmageddon is visible and progresses through several stages, eventually reaching the point of having missing wheels or only the chassis at times. Though cars can be customised to suit the needs and wants of the individual, there’s nothing special about this game’s style at all. That said, it’s not exactly a work of art either. The cars are varied as are the arenas in which they do battle, and I experienced no performance issues in my somewhat brief time. Carmageddon Max Damage isn’t a bad looking game.
